Richard has experience of purchasing National Hunt foals, 3-year-old stores and horses-in-training off the flat to go jumping.
Like the flat racing sales calendar there is an equally active National Hunt one. The October horses-in-training sale in Newmarket is a key sale for flat horses going jumping and provides an abundance of winners. Flat horses with size and scope who have been effective on soft ground over 10-12f are always highly sought after especially when by stallions who have been proven to produce good jumpers.
For National Hunt bred horses there are options aplenty depending on what stage of equine life you want to purchase at. If you want an unbroken store horse who provides you with a blank canvas then there are sales like the Goffs UK Spring sale held in May or the Goffs Land Rover sale and Tattersalls Ireland Derby sale held in Ireland in June. These sales are packed full of the best 3 year old National Hunt horses on offer who are ready to be broken in and sent to a trainer.
If you want a horse who has won a point-to-point or has been placed in a bumper then the many Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham & Ascot sales would be a good place to look. High-class point-to-point winners and bumper winners are highly sought after property and can fetch prices over £200,000 in public auctions but there is also plenty of value to be found.
