The typical duties that Richard performs on behalf of clients include;
Liaising with trainers and reporting on horses-in-training
Richard will keep in contact with the trainers of your horses and report back on the progress of their training and future racing targets. He will also arrange to visit the yards and view the horses in person and see them on the gallops.
Advising on racing targets
Choosing the right races is a key decision for all horses whether a seasoned handicapper or a colt on the Classic trail. Richard can offer advice and a second opinion on targets for horses and equally importantly can advise when not to run.
Advising on vet reports
Whether you are vetting a yearling at the sales or you have a horse-in-training the likelihood is that you will hear from a vet from time to time. A lot of the time it is not a clear-cut decision as to whether you should purchase that horse or whether your horse-in-training should have surgery. Injuries happen and it’s important to make the right decision for both the horse and the owner in the aftermath. Richard can help with these decisions and has good relationships with a number of vets should you need a second opinion.
Owner representation on racedays
If you live abroad and are only in the UK and Europe sporadically you will probably want a Racing Manager to represent you at the races. Depending on the client’s wishes Richard will go racing and chat with the trainer and jockey, watch the horse run and report back to the owner.
Organising raceday hospitality
Raceday hospitality might include a table in the restaurant on raceday or a box during Royal Ascot. Whether you are entertaining family or clients Richard can organise the perfect venue to make your day as enjoyable as possible.
Sales and racing hotel bookings
Following on from organising raceday hospitality Richard can book hotels for clients at racing and sales venues ensuring the client is staying in the place they will feel most comfortable in.
Obtaining Insurance quotes
Richard can obtain quotes for insuring your Racing and Bloodstock interests, as well as advising on which horses to insure and which not to. Some owners and breeders insure whilst others don’t but if your 2-year-old colt has just won a Group race and could potentially become a stallion, can you afford not to?
Dealing with Weatherbys & BHA communication
Whether it’s the Weatherby’s VAT desk or the BHA registration office there is plenty of admin that goes with having horses in training and Richard can take control of that on your behalf.
Checking & approving invoices
One of the most important jobs as a Racing and Bloodstock manager is to check your client’s invoices to make sure they are being charged correctly. Whether it’s an additional vet bill or a set of shoes Richard will check the invoices and question an invoice where necessary to ensure the client is being charged the correct amount.
Advising on horses-in-training and breeding stock sales
If one of your horses-in-training falls below the level you are looking to compete at or his handicap mark is too high for his ability, knowing when to sell is a key decision. Richard will be able to advise clients on the right time to sell and the right time to hold on depending on what the client is looking to achieve. The same can be said for broodmares and youngstock as it is important to cull at the right time and realise the best possible return.
Viewing and reporting on breeding stock
Similar to that of reporting on horses-in-training Richard will report back on a client’s breeding stock and youngstock. Regular progress reports and visits to Studs to view stock will ensure the client’s interests are being well looked after.
Mating plans & nomination booking
Mating plans and nomination booking for a client’s mare/s are key decisions & incredibly important. Many of the best bloodstock operations in the World are due to a fantastic broodmare band built from purchasing quality broodmares. Richard has vast experience in this area having spent 12 years working with Coolmore, Darley and Juddmonte.
Purchase of foals, yearlings, breeze-up, horses-in-training and mares
One of the key bonuses of a client having Richard as their Racing & Bloodstock Manager is his ability to select high-class racehorses at all levels. This means Richard can act as a one-stop shop for his clients and they don’t need to use other Agents or trainers to purchase their racehorses. Whether it’s selecting foals, yearling, breeze-up horses, horses-in-training or mares Richard will be delighted to help his clients and will strive to bring them their best possible chance of success.
